Homeroom Tips · free guides for advisers and offices
Practical tips for running a school’s publications and picture day.
A lot of school know-how lives in a few veterans’ heads. Homeroom Tips is where we are building a free collection of practical tips — how to hit a yearbook deadline, run a smooth picture day, sell ad space to a local sponsor, or set up a clean roster — for the adviser and the front office that have to do it all.
A handful of illustrative starter tips are here today, free to read with no account required. The fuller, searchable library and a way for advisers to submit their own tips are in development; this page says so plainly rather than presenting a starting point as a finished collection.
Practical, not theoretical
Real school-job advice on deadlines, picture day, ad sales, and rosters — the practical know-how a first-year adviser or a new front-office hire would otherwise learn the hard way.
Free to read, no account
Every tip here is free and account-free to read. A school account is only needed for the platform tools a tip points to, not for reading the tip itself.
Honest about what is here
A handful of starter tips are live today; the fuller, growing library and a way to submit your own tip are in development. We say which is which rather than calling a starting point a finished collection.
Who these tips are for
Homeroom Tips is written for the adviser running the yearbook or newspaper and for the front-office staffer who owns the roster, picture day, and the directory — the people who have to do a dozen unglamorous jobs well, often for the first time, with no one standing over their shoulder to show them how.
A tip here is not a sales pitch. It is the kind of advice a veteran adviser or a veteran registrar would give a first-year hire over coffee — plain, specific, and usable the same afternoon.
A few tips to start with
These are real, illustrative starter tips — written in-house, not pulled from any single school’s own account or roster — and they are examples of the kind of practical guidance the fuller collection will hold, not a byline-credited library yet.
Set your deadlines backward from delivery day
Pick the day the book actually needs to be in students’ hands, then work backward: printing and binding time, a final proofing pass, and a buffer for the one photo that always shows up late. A ladder built forward from “today” slips; a ladder built backward from delivery day holds.
Stagger picture day by class, not the whole school at once
A single whole-school block backs up in the hallway by second period. Staggering by grade or homeroom, with a roster-based check-in list printed ahead of time, keeps the line moving and makes it obvious who still needs to come through before retakes day.
Sell ad space with one simple rate card
A one-page sheet with two or three sizes and a firm price does better than a long pitch. Start with businesses that already sponsor the team or the booster club, and set the ad submission deadline a full week before your own print deadline, not the same day.
Import the roster once, and fix errors at the source
Re-typing the same names into five separate sign-up sheets is where a roster goes stale. Import the official roster once at the start of the year, and correct a misspelled name where the roster lives, not in five different documents that will all drift out of sync again next week.
Reading a tip, said honestly
Reading a tip here is free and does not require an account, and we store nothing in your browser to let you read one. If you go on to create a school account to use the platform a tip points to, that account and its data are never sold and never handed to an outside company.
How the money works, honestly
Every tip on this page is free to read. There is no paywall, no account requirement, and no per-tip charge.
This page runs no checkout and takes no payment. The fuller picture of how the platform earns — the early-access picture-day store families buy from — belongs to the flagship and residency pages, not to a page of free advice.
What is live, and what is in development
The tips this page carries get the same honest labeling as the rest of the platform. Here is exactly where they stand.
Live today
A handful of illustrative starter tips on deadlines, picture day, ad sales, and rosters, free to read with no account required.
In development: a growing, searchable library
A larger, searchable collection of tips is not built yet. What is here today is a starting set, not a finished library, and we do not call it one.
In development: adviser tip submissions
A way for advisers to submit their own tip is not live yet. Today, every tip here is written in-house.
How we label it
If a tips capability is live, this page says live; if it is in development, this page says that — not “coming soon” theater. You should never mistake a starting point for a finished collection.
Common questions
Is this already a big library of tips?
No. What is here today is a handful of illustrative starter tips. A larger, searchable library is in development, and we say so rather than presenting a starting point as a finished collection.
Who writes the tips?
Today, every tip here is written in-house, as illustrative examples of practical school-job advice. A way for advisers to submit their own tip is in development, not live yet.
Do I need a Homeroom account to read a tip?
No. Reading a tip is free and account-free. An account is only needed for the platform tools a tip points to.
How is this different from homeroom.support?
homeroom.support is help using the Homeroom platform itself — guides and a self-serve setup for the tool you are logged into. Homeroom Tips is general school-job know-how — deadlines, ad sales, picture day, rosters — that applies whether or not you have opened the platform yet.
Is it free, and is there a checkout on this page?
Yes, it is free. There is no checkout and no live charge anywhere on this page.
Can I submit my own tip?
Not yet. A way for advisers to submit a tip is in development. Today, the tips here are written in-house.
What this page is and is not claiming
Homeroom Tips carries a handful of real, illustrative starter tips on deadlines, picture day, ad sales, and rosters, written in-house — not a byline-credited library, and not pulled from any single school’s own account or roster. There is no fabricated tip count, no invented author, no testimonial, and no adoption stat here. A larger, searchable library and a way for advisers to submit their own tip are in development — not live, and this page never implies otherwise. This is a for-profit vendor, not a charity, and nothing here is dressed up as a charitable gift. This page runs no checkout and takes no payment, and no competitor is named.
